I remember seeing a TSB scan about it, or was it in the WSM. It's page 13-35 in the 968 WSM.

I was about to ask the same question, as mines a 92. With regards to pricing.... I bought my 968 in January of this year, it had a full service history, 83,000 on the clock, and had been sat in a dealers lock up for about 18 months, as 'no one liked the colour!'. so I paid £6500, that's about $10,580 at today's rate...., I have just been adding up all the receipts I have spent on the car, as its M.O.T. was done today (it passed after a bit of faffing about) and so far the total is another $ 8,500 to get the car into a 'day to day driver' but its been emotional anyway.

I prefer the more rare colors.

Sorry for scaring all the 92 owners.....

I can't say I'm actually scared or worried, since, despite my daily 968 forums habit, I'd never heard of '92 con rods being a problem. But again, what exactly is the problem? Pages 13-35 in the WSM just describe a bunch of routine maintenance checks. I'm pretty sure not even Porschedude would consider the connecting rods something to check as part of routine maintenance biggrin.gif . Is the '92 con rod issue related to reliability, or performance (as in the newer ones being lighter weight)? Thanks.

i'd contact pete - he can tell you a lot more about the reliability of those, and exactly how they differ from the newer ones - i've heard of problems with them failing, but only on cars that are tracked

Thanks, guys. I won't lose any sleep over this. I'll just add it to the list of things to replace come rebuild time.

I'm curious, though, if this needs to be added to the list of things to upgrade for those (and I'd love to be among them) adding the upcoming supercharger to a '92. Probably one of those gray area, borderline things that depends on the expected use of the car.

ok - because of the supercharger, i spoke to pete, figuring sooner rather than later was a good idea - i'm glad i did

the early rods are lighter than the later ones, but also weaker where they bolt together - they break under heavy use - pete is going to dig up the cutoff point where they changed them, so we can figure out which cars would have an issue and which ones would not

they cannot be changed from the bottom, and would require the head to be pulled off

the bottom line though is that supercharging an engine with the early rods is NOT a good idea

soon pete will put up a thread about the rods and what to do about them

lol - i've gotten used to rocks being thrown at me

i find it ironic that my last toy had lower end issues - the really early mgb engines only had 3 main bearings - this was better for torque, as there was less resistance, but high revs were an issue, as was bearing wear due to pulse pounding - the later engines had 5 main bearings

the 92s probably have similar ups and downs - the lighter rods probably spin faster, but could have reliability issues at high rpms

"they cannot be changed from the bottom, and would require the head to be pulled off"

I guess that's not such a big deal, since the head gasket should be replaced when installing the supercharger, anyway.

yeah - but at that point you are pulling pistons and would have to re-ring, and since you have already had to pull all the bearing caps to get at the rods, and would have to install new bearings, the only thing left is a valve job to make a full rebuild

but what a monster that could be!!!!

Looks like the seller removed the car from ebay. Anyone heard if it sold? I'm going down that way next week for vacation, I was going to take a look at it if it were still available.
