If your gonna replace the waterpump, now would be a good
time to reseal the front of the engine.

So I got a PPI at Zotz done on the car and it turns out there are a few things wrong.

Leak in head gasket $1800
distributer cap and rotor 150
Power Steering leak 350
left fog light is out Bulb?
Niether the front or back wipers work, motors are 350 each
passenger window switch doesn't work 35
Sway bar bushing 100

All in all its going to cost $3000+ to get it in excellent condition. Not worth it, even for 7700

Most all those are normal things, except for the head gasket. That one I find a little strange, wondering how they came to that conclusion.

Was he willing to talk on the price after the PPI, or is he holding at the $7700?

some of those numbers seem awfully high, but the total to bring the car up is much less than i would have expected - i looked at that car, figured $5k needed to be put into it, and still felt it was a good deal

but, that being said, there is a philosophy fast becoming common knowledge when it comes to these cars - there is a very real base number you can expect to pay for a good running car - you can pay it all at once, if you find one that has been gone through, or you can pay it in pieces if you buy a cheap one and fix it - the bottom line though is that the end result will be nearly the same whichever way you go

do not expect to find a hardtop worth driving for under $10k or a cab for under $13k - even then, you will be looking at compromises - the prices of these cars, while affected by the economy, are still holding to some degree

while it is a buyer's market out there right now, the realities of a truly good car, even in these economic hard times, are likely considerably higher prices - in another year or so, when the economy bounces back a bit, you can expect things to go up a couple of grand

good luck

He's holding at $7700 for now at least. I can't imagine anyone buying the car for that price with all the work that it needs.

The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that the price he set of 7700 was when he thought the car was in great condition and now that he knows what it actually needs, he won't change the price.

Oh well, maybe he'll lower it even more.

i wouldn't count on it - as i said, assuming it needs $5k of work, it's still a pretty good deal - a good solid tub and straight body with no drivetrain is worth almost $5k - you get an engine, trans, and all the rest for $2700? yeah - not bad

also, you can figure that almost any car will need a head gasket (unless it has been done in the last 5 years)

i'm frankly surprised that the suspension was intact given the power steering leak

the air conditioning would have been a concern too, since 92 was R-12

still, even if you fixed everything, and redid the seats, you would still be in for under $13k, and would have a solid car - that's a great price in my book

From the pics, smells like a 5K car to me.

i haven't seen the car or know anything about it, but the engine and trans alone are worth $5k, even with a blown head gasket

i don't think i've ever seen a 968 go for $5k that moved under its own power

that's a 9k-10k car as it sits - 7700 is a steal

it's not a 944 after all

It is a 92 though, so that detracts from it a little. I was really looking for one for track duty and the 92's with there rods would make me a little nervous in that setting. For the street I wouldn't worry at all about it. If he came down to 7k it's got some potential. With the head gasket revelation, you would probably be about 12k into a nice street car, which is still pretty good. With that car after you remove the head and freshen it up, it's a prime canidate for a supercharger.

Hey, I resemble that comment wink.gif But seriously, this isn't the first time I've seen my beloved model year spoken of with a hint of derision. What gives? What's wrong with '92? Mine has been quite reliable overall, with a few exceptions not unexpected in a 17-year-old car. Granted, it was the first model year for the 968, but it followed a decade-and-a-half evolution since the introduction of the platform with the 924. What rods are you referring to? Connecting rods? Rod bearings? Tie rods? Thanks.

cloud - connecting rods - they improved those in 93

banditsc - since a track toy should get a rebuild with new lighter rods anyway, i wouldn't think the rods mattered much - or is that just me being anal again?

but i totally agree with the street car assessment - looks like a good candidate

Great... I've owned this car nearly six years, and have been a regular on this and the previous forum since before I bought the car, and this is the first I've ever heard of this. Oh, well, live and learn, I guess...

I just hate seeing these being sold or trying to be sold as such prices. That's why I didn't sell either of mine this summer (I had to sell the cab to myself since I told the wife I would give her the money when I sold it, payment for buying the 987 CS) - I just wanted too much money. Still won't sell for sell than I want.

Yes, that's just you being anal again. smile.gif For a track car to start out with, I'd rather just dig into the normal things then rebuild the entire engine for a weekend track car.

cool - just checking

i've never built a track car that didn't automatically get a fresh engine at least every season - i hate breaking down on the track, and figure that starting out fresh is good insurance, but i know plenty of people who run used engines and don't have any real problems

Theres a new car just popped up on the forum in Longwood, which is just east of Orlando. Doesn't have a price, but its so close, and right near Zotz to have checked. Might be an all around better car.

I hope this isn't too far off topic, but, since I forgot to ask in an earlier post, I'll ask now - what's the difference between '92 and later years' connecting rods?

Still shaking my head over why I had never heard of this after all these years of owning and following the 968...
