max came out for the weekend and we did the belt job on the white car (lol - ok - he did the work and i watched) - but i took a bazillion pictures, video-taped most of it for back up to make sure i didn't miss anything, and took copious notes - i will be working on the DIY over the next week or so, and post it when it's done

this should be a great tool for shops who haven't done these before or recently, as well as the shade-tree mechanic

Hmmm, decisions, decisions. I'll keep getting quotes from local shops for my belt job, but if you're confident in the quality of the DIY, I'll go ahead and purchase a car lift and the ArnnWorx tools as well. I always enjoy a good reason to purchase more tools!

I think I want one of the Harbor Freight scissor lifts anyway, because then I can put the daughters' cars in the air too, change flat tires more easily, etc., etc. and I can take it with me when we move. Apparently the wife liked Virginia so much that she wants me to find a job there. Posted Image Posted Image

Flash,

I'd like to point out one detail I ran across in my recent dismantilng of my engine: I installed the newer version timing belt tensioner roller pivot pin at my last belt change three years ago, and the pin included a pair of o-rings to help retain the grease. When I pulled the tensioner pivot arm off, I noticed the outer o-ring is missing. Did you run across this? Do you know if a replacement o-ring is available (I suppose I could call Sunset), or what the specs might be on a non-OEM substitute? This is a somewhat obscure, but fairly important detail, because it's critical that the pivot pin remaim well lubricated, so I thought I'd mention it for the DIY, since I know you're making every effort to cover all the little details that often get missed. Thanks.

The pn is 999 707 078 40 and are a ridiculous $5.69 from Sunset. I find them about impossible to get on without damage. It is also impossible to get the shims (900 234 182 02) on front and back and still have room to engage the circlip. The whole thing is truly Rube Goldberg.

Yes, I remember struggling mightily with this as well when I did my belts three years ago. In fact, I vaguely remember giving up on that outer o-ring, because, as you say, I couldn't get the circlip on with it and the shims all in place. Is it any easier to re-assemble this contraption with the engine out of the car? I'd like to utilize both o-rings to help keep the grease on the pivot pin where it belongs. Although, even with the outer o-ring missing, there was still a reasonable amount of grease left on the pivot pin. Thanks.

Any updates on the DIY? I've been holding off on doing mine until this guide is published.

I hate to bug you again Flash, especially since I see your gearing up to take a holiday, but could you post any updates on the DIY? My University Alumni Chapter has planned a track day at the Glen in late July and I am hoping to do my belts prior.

Thanks!

I've been looking forward to the belt DIY as well since I need to update mine this summer.

Flash, I know you've been super busy getting a bunch of really cool things out the door for the 968 community already this year, so I just wanted to chime in with some friendly encouragement that this DIY will have another happy user when you have a chance to get it done.

i know i have really been dragging my butt on this, but i have now loaded all of the files and notes onto the laptop - i will be taking it with me on vacation and working on it - the wife will have to work a bit, so this is better than playing solitaire while she's doing that - but rest assured that i will be doing it with a drink in my hand

So it looks like I did a right decision to pull the trigger a month ago. I managed to do the belts, rollers and Variocam although I was still waiting for the DIY at that point. Flash no offense, I know you are super busy supplying all of us with info and new stuff for 968 :BowToFlash: (just discovered this emoticon - cool)

i actually worked on this while i was on vacation - very nearly complete - once i get back to my office, i can review the video footage and verify that i didn't miss anything - i may need to double check a couple of small things with max too, but that's really about it

Thank God, because I found a small amount of coolant on the floor under the water pump area yesterday - either the new water pump is weeping, or I need to just tighten the new hoses. Or, maybe the HCV is weeping and I'll be glad I bought that spare last week.

Time will tell, but I sure would love to dig into it, verify my belts were done right, and install that supercharger at the same time!

it's at the top of my 'to do" list - once i get home and verify that the house sitters didn't trash the joint, i'm all over it

If you put on new hoses, it's a very high probability your problem is there. You can't tighten the hose clamp enough on the large hose at the thermostat outlet. I'll bet you can get at least a half turn on that hose clamp, and the problem will go away.
