Lead acid batteries can be used in interior locations such as trunks as long as they are vented; BMW has been doing that for years. Is yours (Craig) vented?

Flash / Cloud,

Battery location is OEM for RH drive cars. During the conversion from LH to RH drive the area where the battery was located somehow changed with the relocation of the steering column.

Not sure about the venting, but it is simply covered by the carpet. I am pretty sure that the OE battery was lead acid - but this is a replacement one (gel in this case). I looked at an Optima battery but could not find one over here.
