LOOKING TO BUY 95 968 SAID TO BE IN VERY NICE CONDITION, 35,000 MILES, BUT WITH TRANSAXEL NOICE . AFTER READING THE FORUM THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. SOME HAPPEN AT 25,000 MILES OTHERS LAST TILL 100,000 MILES. MY QUESTIONS ARE--- WHY THE DIFFRENCE? WOULD A DIFFERENT TRANSAXEL FLUID HELP AFTER REBUILD. . WILL A REBUILD CORRECT WHAT SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM FROM THE FACTORY. BETTER PARTS NOW? OR AM I BACK IN THERE IN ANOTHER 35,000 MILES? ALSO ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD LOOK FOR IN PREPURCHASE? if the noise you're talking about is the pinion bearing, the parts and labor is around $ 2,000 - $2, 500 depending on the shop, and it SHOULD be a lifetime repair, if the shop knows what they're doing and/or have changed 968 pinion bearings before. do a search and no doubt many threads will come up on this topic, including various shops recommendations.. good luck

Agree with ds968: if it whines..repair it. I found an excellent shop and the guy sent an itemized bill for a nearly total rebuild.

pinion bearing failure has nothing to do with mileage because it is due to a mechanically installed bearing, and the tolerances of the casting and the installation - the preload associated varies accordingly - how much preload dictates how long it lasts

if it isn't doing it, don't sweat it - nothing you can do to prevent it without installing a new one - nothing you can do to predict it either

ok thanks for the input. How about the belts? When should they be replaced as far as mileage and time is concerned?

on a normally driven car, 3 years or 45k miles, whichever comes FIRST - more frequent if you track the car

and don't forget to have the tension checked 2,000 miles after new belt installation.
