Where is the best deal on Porterfield R4 pads? Flash? 92 968 with stock brakes.

Thanks Brian, I think I'm leaning towards the R4 compound. Used both compounds on my 911 and the R4's had better stopping power than R4S compound. Of course I'll be using my car for autoxing and street driving.

KEVIN,

When I talked to Porterfield about the pads, they said that R4 were not to be used for a car that was on the street, dual duty was the "S" suffix.
The R4 pads are " full race compound" the R4S are " High Performance Street and Autocross ".

The R4 Porterfields are a racing compound and don't work well on the street. If you change tires for the track, then you could change the pads at the same time and use the R4. The R4-S compound is a street compound that you can use on the track, and if you're just starting out on the track, they should work well, but if you are advanced, they are inadequate. A more track capable compound that is also streetable is the R4-1 that has pretty good cold friction capability and a very broad heat friction range. They call it a vintage compound because it works better at lower temps, but also has good heat resistance. I've used the R4-1s on the track and they hold up well and I could not get them to fade (stock brakes and high brake demand track). They work well on the street too and I don't remember that they are noisy either. I tried another brand for my current brakes and I'll go back to the R4-1's. I also use them on my race car (vintage formula ford).

Thanks Stephen, I just got off the phone and ordered the R4-S pads before I read your post. The sales person talked me out of the R4 compound. Most driving will be on the street except 2 to 3 autoxes a month. I hope these pads aren't noisey.

best pad I have used. least dust, no stopping squeak. stops well. With my slot/drill rotors you can hear the pads gripping when you push the brake pedal, but after the first time, it is no big deal.

Well after a year of use the R4S pads are ok as far as stopping goes(non M030). Very dusty on the fronts and not bad on the rears. No squeal what so ever. But if I was to do it again I'd order the R4 pads, but hey that's just me!!!!

very dusty? did you put them on new rotors? i usually only see dust problems, or less than stellar braking results when somebody puts them on non-smooth rotors - if you aren't going to replace them, rotors should always be at least turned before new pads go on
