just replaced my stock VR with a generic VR. My car has 28,000 miles and the brushes were not worn. Voltage output went from 12.5 to 13.5 at idle (which should drop as the battery is brought up to proper condition). when evaluating your VR's condition, don't always go by the brush condition, also take into account the voltage output.
