Did you add the additional money for the plethora of speeding tickets you'll gather along the way? And the continual replacement of rear tires?

Just buy the new Trans Am and be done with it.

lol - nope - didn't add the body work for the inevitable smacking of the proverbial tree due to the power-oversteer-inducing-right-foot either

 

as i have said before, i have driven one of these things that had a boat-load of money spent on it trying to dial it in.  it was one of the worst trainwrecks of a car i have ever driven, and i've driven pintos with a big block in it, 914s with 350 chevys, mgbs with small block fords, and all sorts of other conversions.  i couldn't get out of that car fast enough.  the owner ended up yanking the setup out, and reinstalling the supercharged 968 engine.  he's much happier now, albeit a lot lighter in the pocketbook for the experience.

 

when i was at the point of having to rebuild my engine, i looked at this idea very seriously.  i had an unlimited budget too.  i chose not to pursue that course, due entirely to what it would do to the feel and balance of the car.  if i wanted a vette, i'd have bought a vette.

Yeah, but then you'd have to add the cost of all the huge belt buckles, the closet full of Members Only ( black or red ) " satin " jackets , and also grow a ' 70s porn star mustache . Or is the latter a Camaro thing ?
That said, with the sole exception of the design of the tail , the new Corvettes are pretty damn nice cars, and no longer carry the stigma they once did .. Drove a 2017 and was very impressed . I still like the 968 balance better but the Vette is a much refined car vs. the rattling hunk of crap they used to be . No shame in driving one nowadays , IMHO ..

lol - no kidding.  i'd have to go out and find some white bucks too.

 

i have never been a big vette guy, and i had a 67 427 4 speed (for about a week).  i just don't like the way a chevy engine runs

Other than the big straight sections, my 968 more than keeps up with the big power c7 in our little drive group. In the twisty bits he can't keep up. Handling and balance are always better driving experience than just gobs of power. IMHO.

hmmm - i'd say the guy driving was a weenie.  that car should eat the 968 for lunch in the corners.  it corners at over 1g and the best a 968 can do, even with 17s and M030 bars is struggling to get up to .9g

 

with the added power, and the insane acceleration capability, the C7 should leave the 968 panting and wheezing on the side of the road in any race

 

i still don't like it though

As a new member with the LS1 in my 968, I've looked over the receipts and I'd have to say that $40 to 60k would be just about right to dial it in (depending on the donor car).  I've had very little time in the car already and I can't wait to get it to the track to see what it has going for it, and what it still needs.  If there's a lesson to pass-along so far, it's "let someone else do the heavy lifting for you (at their time and expense), and see if you can get it for a fair price when they are done".  I've got all the time I need to work on the final sorting.  There are plenty of 944/968 V8's out there - wait for one to come up that has been sorted, not abandoned.

i guess as long as you don't actually want to race it, are only doing DEs, and don't mind getting creamed by faster cars, you could have some fun, assuming they put it together right.  the problem is that you'll get bumped up in run group at a DE, and end up "competing" against much faster cars that were designed to handle that kind of power, and will do it better.  lol - of course, if they didn't redo the transaxle, and lower the gearing, you'll not likely be out there for long before it blows, so that might give you a chance for a rethink.  it will be interesting to see how this turns out.  i keep waiting to see one of these set up right.

Why always so negative @flash?  If you think about it, a stock LS1 barely makes more power than the 968 Turbo, and I have read of plenty of higher HP 968 Turbos that have been quite competitive... Yes, gearing, other things have changed... blah blah blah, But sheesh, you would think a non-oem 968 spanked you at the track and left you a little bitter.   ;)  

 

BTW... see here for a very nicely prepped 944 w/LS3.  Seems like he is the only one handing out cream...

not negative.  just reality and experience.  30 plus years of doing this gets you to that spot

 

the thing about DEs is that you don't generally get the best drivers out there in an environment that really shows what a car can do.  way too many people think that their car is better than it is, just because they seem to be doing well.  this is largely because DE events can't usually break things up in to better run groups, and end up with a lot of traffic that prevents the really fast guys from exhibiting what they are capable of.

 

set up right, a V8 powered 968 can do well, but the same driver in a vette would do better.  it's just set up better for handling the power.  the problem is that i have yet to see a V8 powered 968 set up right.  most of them are cobbled together.  in a race though, it won't even be close.  the 968 just doesn't have the design behind it to compete with cars that were designed to have V8s in them.

 

gearing would be the first step, after chassis work.

 

any 968 turbo that does well IN A RACE has a LOT of chassis work done to it.  a full cage would be a must.
