Yeah, as nice of a car as this may be, it's still just a souped-up 968. I'm shocked that it went for $74K at auction. I don't see it being worth more than $50K, but of course the market will ultimately decide.

auctions often bring unrealistic prices. because they usually have the cleanest cars, if a buyer is looking for something, he'll often pay whatever it takes. the unfortunate thing is that he is then stuck with the car.

A lot of Matt's cars in that auction brought stupid money, good marketing, good auctioneer and a couple of money wanting the same car.

1992 Porsche 968 Turbo $US $6,400.00 Salvage title but a lot of room to turn it into a clone for less than $120,000.

The 1994 Porsche 968 Turbo S had one offer. Not accepted.

In a fair number of the auctions I have participated in, as many as a third of the buyers renege after they inspect the car. Yes, they sometimes pay stupid money for something shiny, but after the inspection they pay just the premium and pass on the car. If there is cause, they might not even have to pay the premium. Keep that in mind when you watch Barrett Jackson, when they say sold, it's a hope, not a promise.

Really interesting info, had no idea .
Still, absolutely insane to expect that kind of money for a replica 968 turbo, IMO. Although most of us feel you can't find a comparable car to the 968 for less than $ 50 k or so , that does in no way translate to a $ 100+ K tag by just slapping a turbo on one. At that price level there are a lot more choices finding a comparably rare, more beautiful, faster, better handling , car.

yeah - car auctions suck. it only costs a few hundred bucks to back out, and the seller has lost their opportunity. i've seen it way too often. if you see a car at an auction like that, it's because they failed to sell it through normal means, and are hoping to land a sucker. it happens, but sales fall through as often as go through. it's a great racket for the auction house though.

I agree, Flash. At least e-Bay let's you make a second chance offer to another bidder. I have never seen that happen at a live auction, although it would be a good idea.
