I would like to pick up the belt tensioning gauge for the 944/968 belts. Would also like to get the calibration bar, also. Please respond with condition and pricing info.

Thanks.

If I wanted to buy the gauge new, I could get it at Pelican who has it for a little over $500; however, I'm looking for a used one that is of no further use to its owner. When I had my 944, I had bought one, used, for about $250 and then sold it for that when I got rid of the car. In retrospect, that was stupid of me.....I should have just thrown it into my tool box!

Anyway, I am cautiously optimistic that the gauge can be bought, and hope that someone responds to this note.

Incidentally, it appears that you guys don't use the expensive tool on your cars. So, what are you using? Even though our cars have a hydraulic auto tensioner for the timing belt, I would like to confirm that it is properly tensioned. And, what then to do about the balance shaft belt? I was into my engine several weeks ago, and noted that the balance shaft belt was incredibally loose, so I put a little bit more tension on it, and it now whines (surprise). I guess that I could experiment loosening the belt up until it no longer whines, but that approach does not leave me feeling very good. My fear is that I'll break or throw the balance shaft belt, and it will, in turn, destroy the timing belt and all that goes with that!

Your comments would be appreciated.

Ernie

Shows up on eBay occasionally and sometimes on R.L. and Pelican -- it's more critical for the 944 than the 968 (because of the auto tensioner) -- but still nice to make sure you have the proper tension. I use a P9201, but if I were in the market now, I'd consider the alternatives (Arnnworx tool or Kricket).
