if it was huge i would tend to agree but its very small, only 2.5 inches wide, This is the genuine Porsche Techart Splitter

Its not just a bit at the front, its actually the whole front batwing (front apron) (front apron) undertray, and changes the airflow under the car, as mentioned flash did a lot of work in this area, and of course manufacturers were starting to look at aero seriously in the early 90's.

 

I think mainly in an attempt to make cars more fuel efficient though drag reduction then anything else, as any Indy team will tell you 40% of the engines power goes into the drag of the big rear wing on a street or road course.

 

I am not really a fan of the big Turbo RS rear wing, but the car came with a standard rear wing and I think personally the little front one balances out the overall look, but that just me.

 

the Techart splitters are rarer than hens teeth and command a fortune, a damaged one came up for sale here last year and sold for $600

Yeah, Techart looks very subtle ..and yikes, that's not cheap . Then again nothing hard to find ever is ..
So I looked at my Maserati which does 185 mph ( ha, as I just typed this, the song lyric come to mind ) and since I have a photo of it side by side with one of my friend's Ferrari which he had just bought the day before I took the photo, ( that one can go 195 mph ) I pulled the image up to look at the front ends ; it looks like both cars have "integrated" splitters so it must be a functional thing rather than just design. The rear lip ( can't call that a wing ) looks to be way too small on both cars to make any practical effect difference at all, but I am now wondering if it was actually engineered that way as a sufficient piece to balance and work well with the rest of the body' aerodynamic components and not just for looks only ..??Attached File  image.jpeg   178.23KB   0 downloadsAttached File  image.jpeg   188.16KB   0 downloads

It’s hard to believe the lip serves any purpose other than to open the trunk. Looks good though. I’m sure the carmakers have supporting documentation for it though.

That lip adds nothing at all to the trunk opening, both of the " grab and lift " points are under the trunk lid edge, way below the lip.
Unlike the 968 hatchback which pops up all the way when you push the switch, both the Ferrari and the Maseratti trunks only unlock and pop up by less than 1" , so it requires manual lifting . Cheap Italian cars , lol, they couldn't bother to add a couple of shocks to do that ?!
But yes, it does not seem that lip is large enough to make any impact on aerodynamics, though I could be wrong ( it would not be the first time ..nor the last , lol )

Any way back to aero dynamics

Those little wings on your Maserati will be having a big effect at high speed
On Indy cars there is a little strip at the top edge of the wing, a Guerney flap, these are only a few mm wide but the effects can be dramatic
Back in the 80’s we had a Ford Sierra released in the UK it was horribly unstable at high speed, Ford added two small rubber strips down the trailing edge of the rear quarter windows, these just tidied up the air flow over the trunk lid and the rear of the car, problem solved

It’s a subject that really interests me, but being a high school dropout, sometimes the really tech stuff escapes me

I have a gurney flap on my wing. My red car had the duetsche wing on it and that settled the rear down over the stock wing. Settled being a relative term. The stock wing was useless at high speed braking as the tail felt uncomfortably loose. Dry humor has nothing to do with age. Perhaps Dan doesn’t appreciate humor as much as he ages. I’d love to see a pic of that Sierra.
