Do I understand that, after our Friday night indulging, we are expected to be up, dressed, go out to breakfast, and then present ourselves as ready to leave at 8:15 in the morning? Pretty damned ambitious! (Will there be a Saturday option for those of us that sleep, as there appears to be on Sunday? )

As I mentioned before, I'll be in sunny ( or fiery ) Los Angeles during this time frame , but will be with you in spirit ( and drinking a few spirits in kinship ).  I know you guys will have an absolute blast so I'll have to be satisfied with enjoying this event  vicariously, thinking about it.   With that, all the best wishes, please stay safe , and ...have fun !!

Bill, you could skip the cavern tour and be there before 11 for the rest of the drive, but the cavern really is an interesting sight. Unfortunately there isn't a later tour that works for the day. Just don't party so hard on Friday night :-)

I definitely don't want to miss the cavern!

When I was 18, if school was not in session, I slept to at least 1:00 in the afternoon.

We'll be there on Saturday morning, but we will have just rolled out of bed and we'll bring something to eat for breakfast in the car on the way to the cavern. (And if the cavern has to be ready for tourists before 10:00 a.m. on a weekend morning, I can appreciate why it is moaning!)

Addendum: I was just checking out Moaning Cavern on-line. It appears we will likely be walking through mud. Might want to bring some extra old shoes or sneakers to change into for the tour.

Bill is correct, it could be muddy or damp so bring a change of shoes so you don't mess up your floor mats!

Just got back an hour ago.  A good time was had by all, and I want to especially

thank Kaj for planning the event.

Route #108, the Sonora pass, is a great drive to the #395.

I hit a huge delay just N. of Mammoth.  They were re-paving the road, and

stopped traffic for 30 min.  I had to drive through freshly laid asphalt.

Then out of nowhere it began to rain.

We just got back a few hours ago. Wonderful gathering with some outstanding cars and some even more outstanding people! This year's event might be remembered as the "No Elevators" tour. ; -)
First, the elevator at the hotel was "out of order". Apparently it has been that way for months. Our room was on the 3rd floor! Just going back up to the room to grab something became a real chore after a few times. Then on Saturday we walked down a couple of hundred steps, that last 165 feet worth on a narrow spiral staircase, to the bottom of Moaning Cavern, which then required climbing back up. And, oh yea, most of the weekend saw temps in triple digits. I can report that my AC works fine, though the temp gauge was pointing a bit more north than usual, but thankfully stayed out of the red. After the last two years of 100+ temps, there has been some talk of San Luis Obispo for next year. Big thanks to Kaj for doing most of the organizing.

What’s wrong with walking up and down steps? That’s good exercise. Keeps your heart healthy and your lungs pumping.

True, but the stairs at this hotel were designed and built by munchkins in the 19th century. Most of the customers there had to sidestep up and down the stairs because the steps were too short for a modern foot.

How about next year we do a circuit tour? Stop at one hotel each night and the travel between hotels becomes part of the adventure! Start in Northern California (it will be its own state by then) go up into Oregon and back to California via the State of Jefferson. Good roads, good wine, and the driving has a purpose.

And the stairs in Moaning Cavern were brought over from the Spanish Inquisition - I believe the spiral part was actually designed by the same guy who came up with the Iron Maiden (the torture device, not the band - though one could argue the band was also a torture device!)

Some big challenges this year. We all skipped our excersise class after Saturdays "big dive" into Moaning Cavern. At least the temp was only 60 down there versa 105 on top. The cars where running very warm but not overheating thanks to Porsche's brilliant water cooling design. More exercise at Hotel but the good wine and all the snacks where healing. Thanks to all the 11 fine 968's who participated in this years event...........next year we hit the coast!!!

Kaj, Bob, and Steve,

Thanks again for putting on this great event.  It was a great opportunity to see a part of the west that I did not even know existed and drive roads that have more curves than straight sections per mile.   Sunday evening Bob and I ran into some forest service employees staying at the Rodeway Inn (not the two in the green truck) and they were very curious about our group.  We had a nice chat with them about 968s and their job as members of a hand crew for fighting forest fires.  Nice guys who definitely put themselves in harms way for the rest of us.

The drive home was slower than on the way up due to an accident and construction on 99, but in the 100+ deg heat, the 968 handled the grapevine climb with ease.

See you next year, if not before.

Daniel

Oh yeah, forgot. I will upload some pictures when I get them off the camera,  hopefully this weekend!
