I was working at home Tuesday evening and had the TV on, but not paying close attention, when I heard them mention Porsche.  Turns out it was a black 968 coupe 6-speed.  No idea what the mileage was -- if they even said it.

Sold for $19,500.

The commentators said something about it being the pinnacle of air-cooled Porsches (don't know if they added caveats or timeframes), it was unlikely anyone on your block owned one, and this particular one had the timing belt serviced recently, which was very important.

Not air-cooled -- typing without reading...  The announcer got it correct.

Just earlier this week my co-worker who's always gawking at car sites told me there was a silver 968 at Mecum with ridiculously low mileage ( I think he said 5 K or 6 k ) and the reserve was $ 100 k , but the auctioneers were estimating it'd sell for more than that .. Anyone know what happened with that one ? I can't imagine any collector spending that kind of money for a 968 just to add it to a fleet, but there are a lot of people out there with a lot of throw- away money so I suppose it's not entirely impossible .

Anticipated sale price $100-$125k, brought $45k...even without tool kit and with turbo twists...

And a silver cab too. $45k seems about right for a fairly typical 968, even with low miles on it. Still, not a bad price, but would have loved to see it go for estimated calue.

would have been nice, but i always thought that was dreaming.  even $45k seems a bit high, but low mileage cars are becoming harder and harder to find, and many of those have not had the needed service due to age.  that was the case with my white car when i bought it.  at 14k miles it had nothing but 1 oil change, even though it was 15 years old at the time.

still, good to see, and i hope it translates to price on the white car.  it only has 28k on it, has a just redone interior, and a whole bunch of service just done.  we are guessing close to $30k will not be much of a problem.

Got to get it some high visibility marketing, tho.  Craigslist won't cut it for that car.

People place such a high value on low mileage but I wonder how many differentiate between 5 k miles driven in the first year after which the the car is stationary for the next 15 years , versus one that logs those 5 K miles while driven at least a day every week for 5-6 miles to the grocery store or on a very short fun run, consistently, for all those years..

Probably not many know the real difference and value to keep a car moving, even slowly for short distances enough to warm up the components.  I would guess its even the other way, just left sitting and "undisturbed barn find-ish".  My car has 90,000 carefully crafted miles on it and I could climb in tomorrow and drive cross-country.  Well, not until the snow and ice melt......

I try to drive mine 40-50 miles once a week, without shutting down. I'm nearing 89,000 miles. I try to never let it sit more than 3 weeks even in the worst of Winter. So far, so good...

JMHO,

it is a balancing act.  it has to be driven enough to keep the seals from drying out, and rings seated and such, but not so much as to rack up the ticker.  it has been getting a pretty regular 1500-1700 miles a year since i picked it up.

I'm going for 1.000.000 km's by the time I am too old to drive. Hopefully by then, there are still non-NLA parts. Or fossil fuels.

If you make it to 1,000,000 kms, you'll be an NLA part yourself :glare:

This was on mecum in Kissimmee this week -

A friend sent me photos, before the auction, I don't have an account, so can't see the sold price...

Cool stuff they auctioned for sure.

How about a four cam Carrera motor?

https://www.mecum.co.../engines/01/07/

If anyone has an account, I too am interested in what the 968 and the motor went for...

I had someone tell me what the 94 with a blue top and interior went for on mecum last week - $15,840.

A lot less than what I have in mine just in parts...
