Spotted a nice looking 928 on ebay, if anybody here is interested in the flagship series of the water cooled's.

Always wanted one of these (w/ 5 speed), but never found an affordable example that was not completely thrashed, or an A/T.

I've always lusted after a 928GTS. The interior on that car is in incredible shape from the pictures. I think the wheels look goofy and, contrary to what most 928 owners say, I prefer the rub strips on the sides.

I hope the seller gets close to his/her asking price, but I have my reservations on that...

There's a late 928 in a driveway not far from my house. In the 13 years that I lived where I live, I've never seen it on the road, or even moved from the spot where it is parked. I can't tell you how many times (I could, but you'd get bored real quick!) I've wanted to drive up to the house and ask about it. It's gotta be an '89 or later, looks to be in excellent exterior condition too. I'm guessing there's some mechanical issues due to the lack or movement and some of the other cars in and around this person's garage.

they are both beautiful ( IMO ) and rare, even without considering the immaculate shape this one is in, which makes it even more rare.
and I hope I eat my words because I do wish the seller finds a 928-centric, collector- buyer out there who has no problem shelling out the asking or close to the asking price, but I would be surprised otherwise if anyone will offer much above $ 20 k for it..

That is actually a pretty cheap price for a GTS 5 Spd. Recent GTS 5 Speed have been selling between anywhere form $35k to $90k. They are rare, especially the 5 spd, and are bringing in the money. A 89 or 90 GT is similar shape would be priced from $20 to $30k.

Agree on the price being ok. This is a very rare and, IMHO, the only one I would every buy - 5 speed GTS. There was one that sold up here last year for 45K.

Wow, that's impressive ! At a "consignment" dealer in town I saw a GTS last year, or maybe it was the previous one ( time flies and I can't keep track of things anymore ) in what seemed to be very decent shape with an asking price of $ 11k. The reason I remember the 11K price is that they had a really crappy looking 944 on the same lot for exactly half the price at $ 5.5 k, and I thought " is anyone looking for a Porsche going to debate which is a better value for the money ?! " Anyway, I did not look inside the 928 to see if it was an auto or a five speed, nor at the mileage, just admired the shape the exterior was in which looked pretty flawless.

And that was the ASKING price, no idea what it sold for. That's why I'm surprised to see the figures mentioned here. Can a five speed go for as much as 4X the price of an automatic, all else being equal ?

The diff b/w our tip and manual 968s is only about 10% or 15% max, right ?

The car you saw was probably a S4 auto, which are a dime a dozen. In the 928 world a very small percentage were delivered with manuals, which makes them very desirable. The GTS being the end of the line and most advanced bring a premium, I believe the last year or may two they didn't deliver any US cars with manuals. There are fully optioned out 928 GTS's out there had a sticker of over $100k when new.

I have one now, and had another in the past. Overall I have had more trouble with 944 and 968 electronics than on the 928s, but then again it's possible to buy a 928 that is over 30 years old. Older ones are likely to cause more trouble.

In general I think the 928 has better switchgear. I have had a lot more problems with window switches in the 944 and 968. the 928 AC relay is undersized but is easily supplemented with a power relay mounted near the compressor. One of my 968s needed a new fan control switch and I have had to clean a couple blower motor resistor packs.

Either car will be a huge pain if mistreated or left to get wet and musty inside or fitted with overwattage bulbs or a half-assed stereo or alarm.

Overall the 928 is a great car and are no more trouble IMO than a 968 if you get a good example and do your part.

I'm supposed to be getting another one soon, my brother's from his estate. I have been in the process of buying it from the estate for some months but this process may be winding down. It's more of a race car or project than a nice example. 1987 S4 5 speed with a Stage II supercharger. Water to air intercooled. It is quite fast but a bit rough and has Sparco race seats and a loud exhaust. At one time I thought about swapping the supercharged 5-speed driveline into my much nicer S4 Ladymatic but at present I do not feel I have the time.
