I understand the Porsche Tiptronic trans is vault solid.
Is thar True?

to answer the question, properly maintained the trans is quite solid
that being said, the rubber flex dampener up front where the clutch would be is known to harden and crack with age and heat - to change it requires removal of the trans and torque tube - 14 hours by the book, and an $800 part

no worries - i had the same concerns before i bought one - i have one of each, and the tip was a worry, as i knew little about the box at the time - i have since learned a whole lot more, and thankfully not from having to fix it

The Tip is pretty sturdy. I recommend replacing the fluid if you have not done so. I did have to replace the flex dampener around 80,000 miles. Also, if I park the car for about a week, the transmission fluid will spill out from the clear resevoir in the back. Don't know what that is about but it is a DD, so not really a problem for me... Luck

The only other odd behavior I'll add is it doesn't upshift with the normal pattern when cold. I've noticed when I first leave the house it doesn't upshift until a higher RPM, let's say from 2nd to 3rd, when it is cold. I assume the cold fluid somehow causes this; the fluid goes into a radiator side tank and so comes up to temperature in a few minutes. On the other hand, maybe this is intentional; the tip control computer gets inputs from the ECU, so maybe if the ECU signals that the engine is in "cold start" state, maybe it tells the Tip to upshift later -- don't know.

968Syncro (love the name, that would be fun car) what you are experiencing is normal. It is for emissions control to warm up the car and cat as quick as possible.
Lim Yong, noticed you switched the shifting. Great idea, Porsche's manual shifting is counter intuitive. Did you switch the wiring to the micro switches?

Yes,
pretty simple once I took the gear shifter and covers off.
I just snip and resolder the (positive?) wires at the switches.
Worked out fine and I don't get confused when I drive my GF's
car...
