Cab top won't lock
#1

I have had a problem closing the top on my cab since I bought it 2 years ago. Since I have purchased Flash's Tonneau cover I have not had the need to put the top up ( it is great addition to our cars and I highly recommend it!). That was until today when it started to rain and I had to park the car and go into work.

So here is the deal the top is in manual mode, it goes up and the pins engage but I can not seem to get the little locks to catch in the groove. I can put all my weight into pushing down and forwards and they still will not catch. I will include a few photos.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Steve

Windows down or the glass will split the top rubber molding and keep the roof from coming down all the way.
Also move the top left to right and see if it will come all the way down as you pull down with the top handle in the roof.
I can't tell from the pic. but be sure that the pins are in the "open" state.
Hope this helps.

If the handles wear a bit they will not automatically stay in the "auf" position but will fall down a bit. This will make the latching mechanism not able to engage. Try putting the top up as far as it will go and then, while inside, pull the handles down (use both of them at the same time) to the "auf" position gently while tugging on the central handles. You should find that there is a point where the latch is in the right position and the top will pull tight. You can then "zu" your heart out.

the sheet metal of the header rail has a tendency to bend from use - this will put the latches in the wrong spot - check it and make sure it is straight

It is starting to get nice out again here in maine, I am getting the car ready to drive. I have yet to get the top to actually lock. I have tried everyones suggestions but with no luck.

The latches just barely grab the edge of the locking grove ( same as photos I posted last year) I fear that if I drive it like this the lock will dislodge and the top will pop open and slam back.

I just can't seem to get the top to go forward that extra 1-2mm to get disks into the grove of the catch. I can hang off the center hand hold and pull down with the locking handles but still it won't go.

Any other suggestions?

thanks

Steve

i think you're going to have to download the cab manual and get in there and adjust it

Looks like you have a little gap between the top and the windshield from your pic #3. Can you confirm that?

If there is NO gap then you might need to adjust the fixed points on the windshield header.

If there is a gap, which is what it looks like then your top needs to be adjusted. First make sure you are in full manual mode. If either of the bolts is too tight you might not be getting the full travel of the cable on that side. Given the delicate nature of the main bow I'd be very careful putting a lot of pressure on the top. Either it will go or it won't. As I recall there is some adjustability in the armature behind the rear covers, but its been a while since I've been in there. Flash is right that if you need to go that route the manual is a must.

Keep us posted.

the top should come to rest about 1" from the header - from there you pull down and latch - if there is more than that, then it might not close - then you get to pull the interior panels in the rear and adjust things

It definitely looks like something is tweeked. I would guess that a piece of the frame is bent somewhere and not allowing the top to come forward enough to reach the windsheild frame and line up with the latches.

Thanks everyone.

I think Flash and Rxter are right, I will need to adjust the top.

It never has truly locked since I got it. I am kicking myself now for not doing this when the main bow broke 2 years ago.

The top is in manual mode. There is a gap, that seems symmetrical, when the top is pulled forward.

I have downloaded the the manual and will see how it goes.

I think it will be a pain getting the interior panels out with the chassis brace.

Ill keep you all posted.

it can be done though - you just have to be patient and find the right angle

Got it fixed!

it wasn't as bad As I thought it would be to get the side panels off, Flash was right, just find the right angle.

I adjusted the Threaded Forks to get the centering lugs to be dead on, it was off a little but not much.

Tired to get it to lock and it was still 1-2 mm off. So I took the liner off of the leading edge of the top

In looking at the sheet metal near the locking mechanism, it seemed to be bent, not sure if this is from someone else trying to fix it or stress from it not being in locked position.

With a little persuasion I was able to bend the metal so that the locks engaged fully in the catches. Not sure if this is right way to do it but I don't see any other way to have fixed this.

I will up load some photos soon.

This is the threaded fork to adjust the top, I did both sides

This is the locking mechanism on the underside of the leading edge of the top. the liner has been removed

I bent this metal a little bit to get the locking arm to fully seat in the catches.

Glad you got it sorted <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Which metal did you bend to get it to fit?

Hi tamathumper

I bent the sheet metal that holds the locking mechanism. (see photo) it is under the liner on the head rail of the top

not much to it.

Hey Flash

Thats what I figured you were telling me, When the adjustment didn't work that was the only other thing I could think of.

Is there a way to reinforce that spot? seems to me like it could just bend back.

Thanks again for all your help

Has anyone replaced their top handles? I just put new latches on my top and the one handle I have is worn considerably. I can't seem to find replacements other than dealer, who I haven't called yet. I paid 230 bucks a piece for the latches. Are the 968 handles the same as the 911 handles? Pelican shows two different 911 handles, early and late up to 89. I didn't see one there for the 964 top.
