being a non-smoker, i've always been annoyed at the ash try in our car - anything i stick in there rattled or got stuck under the fixed part of the cover and was a pain to get to

for about 5 years now i've had a spare ash try, planning to modify it to eliminate the door, and make it a useful stash spot

i pulled it apart, dremelled out the lid, carpeted the inside, reassembled, and BINGO!

you can't see it in the pic, but it is still full depth - very useful spot now

Funny! I did the same thing... but wait until next week when I reveal an even better iPhone mount for it. It's funny because the phone fits perfectly in there. However, I want it to fit upright so I can use it. Stay tuned...

lol - i saw somebody who had opened it up, but not carpeted it - as i said, been meaning to do it for years now

where to stick the phone has always been an issue - visible yet out of the way is difficult - on top of that, the iphone is only able to handle 95 degrees - that's tough in a cab - this is the best i've figured out yet

You think that space would accomodate a cup holder? I realize it is the wrong place as its right behind the shifter, but it better than 0, and it would work OK on the freeway and for tips.

I have been meaning to do this. Ever since I put the new exhaust/suspension on earlier this year, that ashtray rattles like crazy around 4k rpms. I ended up stuffing a fistful of dollars in there one day just to put pressure on the sliding door and shut it up.

I'm all over that! I have been jamming my cell phone in a 1/2 open ashtray the whole time. I feel bad about hacking up my pristine car but hey it's just an ashtray. Maybe I'll even save a life as the next owner (after I die) will have no ashtray so he'll give up smoking and never get cancer [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

use dremel to remove material from lid
glue carpet into bottom
replace lid

i have a cab - any other material was not going to hold up to the elements (the same reason i don't have full leather), and would have been difficult to keep clean - since my carpet is black, this also blended in nicely

This is a great mod and it was what lead me to this forum - via a link on another forum. Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I have some left over ribbed black rubber that would make a good lining, but another alternative is the dimpled rubber mat that is used in the 968 CS for the space left by the centre armrest delete.

The trick is to find some cheap automotive carpet which is short and not very thick so as to follow the contours. Think I wrapped it from front to back and then cut and glued the side pieces in.

if i ever get to drive my car again, i'll probably have some new found energy. right now, i'm pretty tired. i've found myself getting a bit cranky and short with people when discussing this stuff.



it doesn't help when i look at another site, like today, and i see somebody, whom i have never met or even spoken to, saying things like this guy ken on net who said "The reason I would not give him my business is strictly ethical. Something you would have to figure out on your own."



i don't know where crap like that comes from. i've never had a dissatisfied customer. i support all of my stuff to the fullest, and go way out of my way to make sure people are happy. heck, i even call them up to follow up on stuff, just to be sure. that kind of thing really wears on you after a while.

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone's got one and they are all not nice looking. If you didn't read this stuff perhaps it wouldn't bother you as much. Of course I know with you just the thought that it's out there would be bother enough! But at least you wouldn't be pouring gas on a fire. I gave up trying to please or get people to like and or agree with me long ago. When I find those that don't, I feel sorry for them. For about a second! Still is a slight aggravation but not as bad. Stupid misguided people breed like rabbits and you can't put enough shells in your shotgun fast enough to eliminate them. So ignore them. A persons opinion only has value when someone else knows about it. I'm done!

yeah - the part that bugs me, and this is getting way off topic and headed for a rant, is that people like that form opinions with no basis in personal experience. clearly they heard something from somebody with an ax to grind, and then formed an opinion based on that. while this is of no real consequence to me, it shines a light on a much larger problem. we let people who do things like that vote! that's the kind of person who listens to some campaign commercial on television and forms an opinion and votes because of it. that is just plain scary.



back on topic - sort of



i am constantly working on things like the ashtray mod. i am currently trying to work out more enclosed storage space for the cab. kind of like map pockets with lids. because i put the subwoofers where the storage boxes are, and i have an amp in my glove box, and my map pockets are essentially now useless due to the 6.5" woofers now there, i need such space desperately
