Thanks all!

I found a receipt in the glove box from last year (october 2011) showing that the timing belt was changed and the water pump was rebuilt (on the same receipt was a note stating the radiator was in bad shape and was fixed temporarily). I'm going to re-do the timing belt, balance shaft belt and all the rollers, but am on the fence about doing the water pump.

A more thorough inspection has revealed a history of kludges. I have non-original relays creatively wired into the fuse-box. The cooling tank expansion cap is non-original and not correct and allows water (not coolant, they only had plain water in it *sigh*) to escape -- thus probably the cause of the overheating.

The wire from the coil to the distributor is bodged together -- electrician's tape and the wire coiled and stuck in the receptacles.

And I'm sure I'll find some more "creative" mechanical work as I get further into it... I suspect my post count here will start going up dramatically!

Oh.. and my favorite so far... there's a spot on the left flank where someone has scraped off a Herbalife sticker -- thus leaving Herbalife scratched in the paint. Herbalife vendors should not be allowed to own Porsches.

Sounds like this particular 968 was well on its way to where most 944's end up - and you've rescued it just in time!

Congrats! Do the water pump and make sure it's new, not rebuilt. IMHO. Don't even think about it. Small price to pay while you have everything apart.

There are a few people here (Langley968 and me) who are running new German water pumps that aren't OEM and they seem ok at much less than the P price so don't get a re-man.

The replacement pump for my first 944 was a Laso. I never had a chance to install it so I sold it to the buyer of the car. He had it installed and it toasted itself in a month. Boy did I feel guilty.

I filled the cooling system for a bit of testing, car overheated again quite quickly. Radiator was cold, engine was boiling, so looks like the water pump is a must.

I see that Pelican offers the Laso brand for the water pump. However for my purposes, I'd prefer to use Paragon (they'll ship via US Express Mail, which is cheaper and less hastle from Chilean customs), but they don't list a brand for the part. Anyone know what brand they use?

The relay that's been creatively wired is the one for the aux cooling fan. Running through the Clark's garage testing procedure reveals that it isn't working correctly (surprise, surprise). Paragon doesn't have it in stock, and Pelican doesn't have the $120 version in stock either (they offer an alternative for $220). Where might I be able to find this cheaper?

All in the UK , have look and see what shipping costs .

Use the laso pumps , and did about 10 of them on different cars type 944/968 , never had a problem , but always change the pump with the belts .
I thgink laso is the only one who makes these pumps , and is if i undestood correct a porsche supplier or used to be .

No luck at any of the UK suppliers, but did find a relay with matching description at:

They list the part number as 944.615.104.04, where as the porsche parts catalog lists it as 944.615.104.03. I wonder if there's any difference between them...

They had new OEM replacements for a very reasonable price. Your symptoms sound like mine, my plastic impeller had spun on the shaft.

Paragon has the short valve cover bolts for $33 (are they solid gold?). I snapped two of them while removing the cover to inspect the camshafts and timing chain. Is there a cheaper source elsewhere?


I think I need to start a thread elsewhere, since I'm no longer purchasing the car. In other car-related forums there's a place for "build" threads, kind of a general holding place for one person's car. Is there an appropriate place here for such a thread? Maybe a blog?

Thanks Flash. I did a search on "valve cover bolts", but didn't find that particular thread. Maybe I'm not looking for the right thing. I ended up ordering the ones I needed from Paragon with the rest of the bits I needed to get the car running again. I'm realizing that my initial budget was wildly optimistic.

My car is going to need a lengthy restauration process, so I wanted a place where I could jot down notes, place before&after photos, complain about the cost of valve cover bolts, etc, without bothering people that aren't really interested in the process. I think the blog area is the most appropriate for that, supplemented with the Garage areas for the photos.
